This new publication was printed using something called an orphaned copyright, which means that the publishers of the book believe the holders of the copyright no longer exist or will not come forward. When I first saw that this book would be available again I was thrilled and ordered it immediately. Unfortunately, it is clear that no time or money was spent to make a quality product. It looked like a bad xeroxing project done at 4:00 in the morning. It could have been a wonderful opportunity to introduce this material to a new audience and give a fresh copy to those of us that already love the material. Instead, it seems to have been rushed out with no quality control to make a quick buck. The material is worth hunting down as a used book. I returned my copy of this book and purchased a "new" used copy for less than half the price and could not be happier.
I dicovered this book in the late seventies just before my first marriaige. It allowed me to do our wedding invitaions in handwriten italic (over 50 with envelopes invitaion reception invitaion and return envelopes). It also was my workbook for an adult class in a local school and other classes. Usually I let the students do the work and lessons and note areas they need to improve or correct. The trace and copy method works well and Eager adds lessons on correcting mistakes, learning to work letter by letter of nonsence words to impove accuracy. Highly recommended and after too many years it is back in print.
I'm taking a short course in calligraphy and we are learning the Italic style. This book was recommended by the instructor and I was happy to find a used one on Amazon at a decent price (the original selling price when the book was published was $3.95). The instructor is not using this as a text, but I'm using it for daily practice. It is divided into short, intense lessons that mix reviewed material, new material, and a preview of the next lesson. I am enjoying working through the book. The Italic lettering is taught first by laying tracing paper over the lettering in the book to learn the strokes, then by copying without tracing. One point of dissension I have is that the author recommends using the calligraphy markers to start. Personally, I feel that is a waste of money, unless you want to stick with the markers for ease in drawing calligraphic art later. I prefer using nib pens from the beginning so there is no transition from using markers to pens. As a beginner, I like the pens that use ink cartridges rather than markers or dip pens because I think they give me better control and consistency. Overall, I would definitely recommend this book to improve handwriting and/or to learn the basics of an easy calligraphic style.
I was given this book over 30 years ago by a dear friend and it sparked a life long interest in calligraphy. Over the years, I've learned many other hands besides Italic and purchased many, many books and I can still say that this is the best learning and teaching guide I've ever used.Mr. Eager focuses on the letter shapes, which the student practices with felt tip pen until he/she has mastered the letter form. Then the fun begins! He teaches the student to write those same letters using a chisel tip pen (a calligraphy pen) and the results are magical. I've taught my own 7 children as well as many others throughout the years using this book and I've yet to meet a child who didn't beam with pleasure the first time he/she put calligraphy pen to paper.Mr. Eager goes further in teaching Italic cursive writing, a quick and beautiful cursive hand, in the last segment of the book. This is a hand that can be written quickly enough to use as ones every day handwriting. He has also wisely included many examples of Italic calligraphy pieces to inspire the student to create their own calligraphic works of art.This book is designed as a workbook as well as a textbook for the student to write in the book itself. It's helpful and encouraging for the student to be able to look back at his/her previous work and appreciate the progress. However, since this book is out of print and hard to find, I now write on a copy of the practice pages so that I can leave the original book pristine since I will some day be unable to find a copy anywhere.The most recent copy I purchased is for my 11 year old son and I'm enjoying, once again, watching a child take pleasure in learning to write beautifully.
I order this book whenever someone says they want to improve their handwriting. The forms inside are great for teaching diagonal slants and the horizontal lines teaches one to make the letters(lower case) the same size. I got one for my granddaughter to improve her cursive.
Many years ago I taught Calligraphy in several Adult Education programs. The students were all very successful, and I attributed this to the use of this book by Fred Eager. When trying to purchase it again just recently, I was surprised to see that Amazon was really the only way to get it, and so I ordered another one. This purchase was pristine, timely in arriving, and as wonderful as I remember it. The book is a tremendous study for all students, and worth its weight in gold.

This book comes with practice guides that allow you to actually learn the Italic Calligraphy method at home.Also covers ways to add flourishes and touches on other fonts as well. An easy way to embellish invitations, holiday cards and other items that will be appreciated by you as well as those who see it. With an attention to details and correct form, this book will make learning an enjoyable and pleasant experience!
Possibly the best learn to write beautifully guide. I first used this in the 70's and have given copies to my son and friends ever since.
